Nicolae Balcescu Highschool
Located in the city center, the school becomes a dynamic hub through its revitalized design. Our proposal embraces the school’s historic building and its subsequent additions, reshaping the surroundings into a protected and engaging space where history and modernity coexist. The project reactivates the promenade along Canalul Morii by introducing modular elements, creating a flexible, accessible, and visually open area. This redesign eliminates obstructive structures, promotes pedestrian-friendly spaces, and reduces road traffic by reconfiguring streets and shared spaces. Adjacent streets are enhanced with tree-lined cycling trails and pathways that buffer the school from the roads. Removing physical boundaries fosters seamless pedestrian and cyclist mobility, while maintaining a nod to historical drainage systems preserves the area’s character. The new design harmonizes with the historical building through simple, compact volumes that integrate with the inner courtyard. The contrast between the old structure and contemporary additions highlights their individuality while fostering functional and visual cohesion. A covered porch and surrounding gardens enhance the courtyard’s serene atmosphere, blending architecture with sensory experience. Ultimately, the revitalized schoolyard balances tradition and innovation, creating an educational environment that connects past and present while enriching the urban landscape.
